With the increase of modern industrial development, fire prevention and control have become a significant issue. The traditional water-based fire suppression systems cannot extinguish all fires, and sometimes can even cause more damage. Therefore, a more effective and environmentally-friendly method- gas suppression technology has been increasingly applied in fire protection, especially in places where water-based sprinklers cannot be used.


Gas suppression technology is based on using inert gases, chemical suppressants, or a combination of both to extinguish fires or suppress fires to prevent further spread. The gas used in such systems is stored in cylinders and released into the area where the fire is detected. This technology is commonly used in data centers, server rooms, chemical storage facilities, and other areas with sensitive equipment.


In addition to its efficiency in protecting valuable equipment, gas suppression technology has an advantage over water-based systems in that it does not damage machines, electronics, or paper data. Additionally, it does not leave any residues and is safe to use with humans present on the premises.


The main function of gas suppression technology is to remove oxygen from the surrounding air to stifle the fire. There are different types of gas suppression systems and various types of gases that can be used with each type. The systems are classified based on the type of gas used:


1. Inert gas Inert gases, such as argon, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, are used to displace oxygen and create a fire-extinguishing environment. Inert gas systems are commonly used in data centers and archives.


2. Chemical agents Chemical agents, such as FM200, Novec 1230, and Halon 1301, work by lowering the temperature of the affected area and starving the fire of oxygen, effectively extinguishing the flames. The advantage of these systems is that they can be used in areas that require rapid suppression and do not require high amounts of space to store the gas cylinders.


3. Hybrid systems Hybrid systems use both inert gases and chemical agents. They are used in areas where a combination of both systems is needed, such as in large data centers with different types of equipment.


With the increasing demand for gas suppression technology, manufacturers have had to design systems that provide more effective protection with fewer carbon emissions and less environmental impact. These systems are commonly used in critical places with a high risk of fire, such as power stations, chemical factories, and data centers.


The development of gas suppression technology has posed a massive challenge to firefighters. In fire situations, it is crucial for firefighters to know the type of gas used in the system before fighting the fire. This is because the gases used in the systems are either poisonous, flammable, or odourless, which may pose a risk to the firefighters’ health if they are unaware of the gas type. It is therefore important for firefighting personnel to be trained on the various gas suppression systems and how they work to ensure they can respond appropriately in case of a fire.


In conclusion, gas suppression technology has become increasingly popular in recent years due to its efficiency in protecting valuable equipment and preventing further damage, especially in situations where water-based systems are unsuitable. As technology continues to advance, we can anticipate more innovative gas suppression systems to be developed, making firefighting more manageable and ultimately saving lives.
